Early English Books Online and the Text Creation Partnership

Users of Early English Books Online (EEBO) know that the database contains the full text of more than 100,000 English-language books printed in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British North America and works in English printed elsewhere from 1473-1700. However, because much of this full-text material is presented in image file formats such as GIF, PDF, or TIFF, it is not fully keyword searchable. This is where the Text Creation Partnership (TCP) comes in. Dalhousie is a member of the TCP and has been contributing to a project that will eventually see 25,000 EEBO documents made available as completely searchable ASCII text. Users will be able to view both the transcribed text and the corresponding original page images. 11,500 documents have so far been "SGML encoded" by the TCP. The University of Michigan hosts a search interface where users can search this full-text segment of EEBO.

Try searching Early English Books Online at the Text Creation Partnership website.

Biological Abstracts changes search platform

In January 2008, the Dalhousie Libraries' subscription to Biological Abstracts was moved to the search interface provided by ISI, the Institute for Scientific Information. This gives Biological Abstracts the same look and feel as Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports. Database content remains the same (coverage from 1926 onward).

Milton Bibliography Available Online

The online edition of the Milton Bibliography is a revision and a continuation of Milton: A Bibliography For the Years 1624-1700, published by Medieval & Renaissance Texts & Studies (MRTS), Binghamton, New York, in 1984. The bibliography attempts to bring together all manuscripts and editions of John Milton’s works and all studies and critical statements concerning his life and works, all allusions and quotations, and all significant imitations during the years 1624-1799. No print counterpart for the entire database exists. This online tool is published by University of Toronto and made available as part of their Iter project, a not-for-profit partnership that aims to promote the study and teaching of the Middle Ages and Renaissance (400-1700) through the development of online resources.

Project MUSE Adds Back Issues as part of Pilot Program

Project MUSE recently added the full range of back issues of two of its long-held journals, "Journal of the History of Philosophy" and "Journal of Democracy."

The addition of the back issues of these two journals is part of a pilot program to determine the feasibility of expanding coverage to include back issues. The pilot program is in the early stages and MUSE developers anticipate adding additional back issues for selected journals published by the Johns Hopkins University Press.

For the "Journal of the History of Philosophy," the back issues added are Volume 1, 1963, through Volume 37, 1999. For the "Journal of Democracy," the back issues added are Volume 1, 1990, through Volume 5, 1994.

CBCA Complete

As of January 1, 2008, the Dalhousie Libraries have replaced the separate subscriptions to three CBCA databases (CBCA Business, CBCA Current Events, and CBCA Reference) with a single database: CBCA Complete.

CBCA Complete combines content from all four CBCA database subsets (the 4th is CBCA Education) and provides full-text coverage of current events, business, education, science and medicine, arts, law, and lifestyles, all with a Canadian focus. Subject coverage is comprehensive and the information comes from the broadest range of Canadian sources available anywhere. With over 4.5 million records and indexing more than 1,600 periodical titles, CBCA Complete is the first stop for anyone interested in current events, business, science, the arts, and academic information as produced in Canada.
