Alternative Press Index (Trial)

Trial access to Alternative Press Index is available on the Dal Libraries' trial resources site. Access is by authorization number and password which are provided on the trial resources page. The trial will end April 19, 2008.

Alternative Press Index indexes nearly 300 alternative, radical, and left periodicals, newspapers, and magazines, covering cultural, economic, political, and social change from 1991 to the present. Subjects covered include anarchism, indigenous peoples, democracy, labor, ecology, national liberation, feminism, theory and practice of socialism, gay and lesbian issues.

Brill Online (Trial)

Brill Online is a collection of digital resources that focuses primarily upon areas such as History, Classics, and Religious Studies, but content is not limited to these subjects. The trial provides access to the entire suite of Brill Online products, but these are also available as individual subscriptions. For the duration of the trial, which ends on March 13, 2008, access is available from on-campus locations only.

ISI Web of Knowledge Introduces New Interface


As of February 3, 2008, ISI databases available through the "Web of Knowledge" portal are available on a new upgraded interface. Some of the new features are:



  • Whether searching all databases or an individual collection, users can now use the search boxes to perform general searches. They can also add more search boxes to add more search fields for complex searches.

  • Results pages display more detail, including bibliographic information for records, as well as full-text links and OpenURL linking.

  • Results can be analyzed and refined directly from the Results pages

  • Analyze and refine searches from Results pages

  • Citation results and related records searching are clearly highlighted in individual full records, enabling users quickly and easily find a wider variety of relevant articles.

Search Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports or Biological Abstracts using the new interface.

Blackwell Reference Online (Trial)

Until March 1, 2008, the Dalhousie Libraries are hosting a trial of Blackwell Reference Online, the new online reference collection from Wiley-Blackwell Publishing. Nearly 300 reference volumes are currently available in BRO, making it the largest academic reference collection of its kind available online. Subject coverage includes Business & Economics, History, Language & Linguistics, Literature & Cultural Studies, Philosophy & Religion, Sociology & Psychology, and Classics. The interface incorporates sophisticated functionalities such as: search options and innovative classification – by subject, person, period, key topic and place; 'quick search' on every page allows searching of individual titles or the whole database; numerous illustrations enhance and illuminate the content.

Access during the trial period is available on campus only.
